Transparent Storytelling with SkyBox

Exhibitry collaborated with the Alameda Creek Watershed Visitors Center in Sunol, California, to enhance interactive storytelling through the use of transparent display screens. The SkyBox Dimensional Video Wall designed to present detailed information about the watershed and surrounding area in an engaging and multidimensional format.

Project Overview

SkyBox features a high-resolution interactive video wall that utilizes transparent OLED monitors. This innovative exhibit includes a physical topographic map of the watershed area, positioned behind the transparent displays. This setup allows for a unique blend of digital and physical storytelling approaches. Visitors can interact with the three-dimensional map, which is augmented by digital overlays, creating a seamless integration of virtual and physical experiences.

Implementation and Features

Transparent OLED monitors immediately catch the eye of visitors, as the sleek digital displays transform to reveal the illuminated topographic map behind them. These displays enable a layered, immersive experience, with multiuser touchscreens and interactive lighting enhancing engagement. Remote content updates ensure the exhibit content remains current and adaptable.

For example, one section of the interactive exhibit allows guests to take control of a virtual video drone to explore predetermined areas of the protected lands where few members of the public can typically access. They can guide the drone along a designated path while viewing a navigable 360-degree view of the area. It’s like a Google Street View from the sky, offering a unique perspective and deeper insight into the watershed’s landscape and ecology.

Other features include detailed overlays that provide historical context, ecological information, and real-time data visualizations, allowing visitors to engage with the content in a meaningful and educational manner. A combination of OLED technology, interactive elements, and remote updates ensures that SkyBox remains a cutting-edge tool for storytelling and education.

Outcome

The transparent monitors significantly enhance visitor engagement and understanding of the watershed. SkyBox’s interactive video wall provides a dynamic educational experience, integrating various media types and offering a comprehensive exploration of the ecosystem.

Exhibitry’s innovative use of transparent monitors in this installation demonstrates how cutting-edge technology can enhance interactive storytelling. This project created a unique and engaging visitor experience, effectively by combining digital content with physical elements and interactive storytelling.
